Phormictopus sp. 'Dominican Purple' is an extraordinarily metallic purple-colored member of the subfamily Theraphosinae. This spider reaches a massive 7-8.5" diagonal leg span and is unbelievably beautiful. Mature males and females develop incredibly vibrant metallic purple to violet coloration throughout their bodies and legs.

This tarantula is native to semitropical rocky habitats of the Dominican Republic—the natural history of Phormictopus sp. 'Dominican Purple' is not well documented. However, this undescribed species is likely similar in biology and ecology to P. cancerides. This terrestrial opportunistic burrower builds silken retreats beneath and around rocks and awaits prey at their retreat entrances at night.

P. sp. ‘Dominican Purple,’ similarly to other members of its genus, has a medium to fast growth rate, strong feeding response, and can be bold–sometimes throwing dynamic threat postures in addition to flicking urticating hairs when spooked, which is unusual amongst most New World genera of the subfamily Theraphosinae. P. sp. ‘Dominican Purple’ is better suited for keepers having experience working with large and peeved spiders due to its large size and defensive disposition.

A large, cross-ventilated terrestrial enclosure that is wider than deep works well for P. sp. ‘Dominican Purple’ adults. Spiderlings and juveniles are best maintained with deep, barely moist substrate and cross ventilation. Mature specimens should be provided with a deep substrate and a secured cork slab overlying a depression or cave for opportunistic burrow construction. Allow the substrate to dry out almost completely between periodic light mistings. If you have always wanted a purple spider, there are few species as spectacular as the Dominican Purple Tarantula.
