The Cobalt Red Rump Tarantula, Thrixopelma cyaneolum Schmidt, is a gorgeous, colorful, and docile dwarf New World tarantula of the subfamily Theraphosinae. Adults mature at 4-5" diagonal leg span and develop a jaw-dropping inky black coloration with royal blue sheen on their carapace, chelicerae, and femurs. If that were not enough, the abdomen is jet black with electrified rusty red setae. The legs have zebra-like yellow stripes on the patella through metatarsi and are lined in sharply contrasting orange-to-yellowish bristles.
T. cyaneolum is native to the highlands of Peru. This species is a slow grower– a trait typical of mygalomorphs residing in cooler climates. T. cyaneolum is suitable for beginners, as they are generally docile. However, these tarantulas can be skittish and raise their abdomen when spooked. They can be handled but may flick hairs on occasion.
T. cyaneolum has a good feeding response and can be maintained in a terrestrial enclosure (wider than deep in dimensions). Provide this species with a deep, airy, and fluffy organic substrate for extensive burrowing. Keep the substrate barely moist for spiderlings and primarily dry with periodic light misting for larger juveniles and adults. A cork hide with a cavity or cave beneath is suitable for adult specimens.
The intense, inky cobalt paired with the rusty orange color combination of the Cobalt Red Rump Tarantula makes this spider a sight to behold and a must for any serious collector.
