The Peruvian Blond Tarantula, Lasiodorides polycuspulatus Schmidt & Bischoff, is a handsome, robust member of the New World subfamily Theraphosinae hailing from Peru. This species attains a 6" diagonal leg span at maturity and develops a gorgeous coppery tan to blond-colored pelt overlying its black exoskeleton. Mahogany urticating setae make for a nice color contrast on the abdomen. The chelicerae and femurs add beautiful contrast by being covered in light graphite hairs, while the patella through the tarsus of each leg is lined in blond hairs.

L. polycuspulatus is a terrestrial species that constructs earthen scrape-like burrows around and under rocks and debris in drier forested regions of Peru. This species has a slow growth rate and a skittish but gentle disposition, making them a suitable New World species for beginners. L. polycuspulatus has a moderately strong feeding response but may fast occasionally for weeks to months.

As a terrestrial, a wider-than-deep enclosure with excellent cross-ventilation works best for L. polycuspulatus. They should have a deep, airy, fluffy organic substrate and a well-secured cork slab overlying a depression for constructing their burrows. Keep the substrate dry for adults with periodic misting and barely moist for spiderlings. The Peruvian Blond is a beautiful addition to highland subtropical tarantula collections.
