New World spiders are from the continents of North and South America. They are characterized by their featured urticating setae. These are the porcupine like barbs used for self-defense and effective against predatory mammals. These hairs can irritate the skin, lungs, and eyes. There are several barb types, I-IV. Some unique NW species do not have them at all! These spiders are generally safer to keep as venom is known to be less potent.
